This post is long overdue but this past semester my studies and extra-curriculars consumed most of my time. With winter break finally here, I am back with posting. My life has been pretty routine since getting back to school in August. My trip to Louisville, Kentucky, was the one thing that shook up my weekly routine.
So why did I go to one of the most random cities in America (in my opinion)? Well, I’ve talked about my participation in student media before on here and luckily, this year, I went to the College Media Conference with other Q30 members.
The College Media Conference happens yearly and this year the conference was in Louisville. We stayed at the Galt House Hotel where the conference took place. This hotel hosts those who go to the Kentucky Derby, so that was pretty cool.
The conference was extremely educational. I learned so much more about journalism and I loved every second attending each session.
I learned a lot, and I lived a lot that week. I’ll walk you through each day.
October 25, 2018 : I woke up before the sun even rose, we all had to get the airport nice and early for a 7 a.m. flight. We boarded and were off to Baltimore for our layover and from there, we made our way to Louisville. Once we landed a car picked the group of 10 up. We made our way to the hotel, changed and headed to a few sessions. After attending a few sessions, the group of Q30 members and I went to dinner. It was SO good. We went to The Old Spaghetti Factory. Now, if anyone knows me when I go out to eat my choice of beverage is ALWAYS seltzer. So I asked my waiter for a seltzer and it’s like I had 90 heads. He looked up at me so confused and said, “is that a alcoholic beverage?” I had to say uh you know like bubbly water? Then he understood. After eating we explored Louisville, went though Forth Street Live which has cute bars, restaruants and shops. We then relaxed in the hotel room after an early day of traveling.
October 26, 2018 : So today was a full day of sessions on college media. Once the sessions came to close, we went to Guy Fieri’s restaurant where I had some real southern BBQ pulled pork, YUM. Oddly enough, we saw a man there with a Bobcats hat on. Turns out he’s an alumnus of Quinnipiac and now his daughter goes to the University of Louisville. Small world.
October 27, 2018: I’m not a huge museum girl. If you know me, then you know I’d rather watch paint dry, then go to a museum. But, the Louisvile Slugger Museum Factory is very, very cool. We did a quick tour of the factory. Before the tour started, I turned to our Sports Director of Q30 and said, “so why’d the MLB stop using wood bats?” He looked at my completely baffled that I said that. Turns out, if you didn’t know, the MLB still uses wood bats…opps. Our next pit stop was to Churchill Downs, the famous spot for the Kentucky Durby. I didn’t think I’d be that interested but IT WAS SO COOL. They played a super inspirational video prior to the tour and have you walk through a little muesum. I was obsessed with all the hats and dresses so many celebrities had worn over the years to the Kentucky Derby. The tour was very interesting and I could just imagine thousands of people filling up those stands. Of course, at the end of the tour they have you exit through the gift shop, and that’s where I saw hundreds and hundreds of hats. I didn’t think I loved hats and headpieces until I was trying almost every single one on for over 20 minutes. At night, we went to a really cute restaurant (totally don’t remember the name) with our advisor. I really overinduldged in guacamole (which everyone I traveled with knew that’s the only food I had been craving all week).
October 28, 2018: Early in the morning it was back to Connecticut. It was a great trip, with great people.
I’m ready for second semester Q, see you soon!
