Here are all of my favorites for this years Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

I don’t even know where to start when this sale comes around. This is usually the time I buy my brown boots for the fall season, but my boots have kept up their look and shape. The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is definitely the best time to buy your favorite pricy item because it is most likely marked down. For non-card holders the sale begins July 20th and ends on August 5th. I’d say my favorite item at the moment is the Double V Rib Knit Tank, perfect to throw on with any type of shorts for the summer. FYI it comes in a ton of different colors!

Looks in Southport, NC

While I was in Southport, North Carolina I really wanted to wear fun, bright outfits. Usually, I wear neutrals and steer away from any sort of color. It sounds absoultely insane but I think colorful pieces of clothing can clash with my red hair. Mark my words, you will never catch me in purple, bright pink or orange, I swear my hair would clash with those colors horribly. Do I sound crazy? I’m very specific on what I will wear. My mom is the same way. I guess you could say daughter like mother? But, down south I felt as though I needed to wear color (nothing too crazy of course). In my opinion, the south radiates bright colors. I wanted to wear really fun looks while I was there, it’s vacation after all.

Now I may of completely contradicted myself so bottom line: bright colors are not my favorite, but down south I felt the need to wear some subtle color. Make sense?

So my first outfift I will continue to call my “tablecloth outfit.” Thank you Chris for pointing out this outfit looks identical to a tablecloth your family used to have. From a boys perspective I can totally see the whole “tablecloth” look.

Personally, I think this outfit is so fun. My favorite part was the back, it ties into a bow which I LOVE. Gingham is a super popular pattern this year and I am so for it, even if it looks like I’m wearing a “tablecloth.” I paired this outfit with my white and beige Jack Rogers.

Outfit two I actually bought as a two piece. The pants actually have the cutest matching top that ties in the front.  I was with my family and didn’t want to show too much skin (& I also wanted to save the full outfit) so I paired it with a white v-neck and tied it on the bottom. I think it turned out so cute! My mom bought me statements earrings from Jazzy Jane’s Boutique. They are so beachy and I love them. For shoes I wore Steve Madden sandals with a chunky, small heel.

The “Tablecloth” Look

Outfit is from a local boutique so I can’t link exact. Click here for a similar look.

More pictures in this outfit: here.

Southern Stripes

I bought this from Molly and Zoey, a local boutique, but I found the set online! Click here.

Had to add a picture of the bar we ate at the last night in Oak Island. I can’t remeber the name but it was so cute and so yummmmmy!

Must Have Summer Accessories

Summer is just about here but not quiet yet, it leaves plenty of time to stock up on some accessories for summer. Just in time for summer I put together some of my must have accesories, and I also included tips on saving on all of these items. For my secrets on saving money when shopping click here.

First up is a plain baseball cap. I wear baseball caps nearly everyday during the school year, but in my opinion they’re essential to my wardrobe during all seasons. A simple white baseball cap would match anything on days you’re just to lazy to wear makeup or have your hair done.

My second must have are statement earrings. I am obsessed lately with statment earrings because they make a simple outfit exciting and different. To me a perfect outfit is denim jeans or shorts, a simple white tee, statement earrings and espadrilles. That SCREAMS summer to me. So the problem is that statment earrings can be pricy and in my opinion they’re more of a seasonal summer/spring piece. I wouldn’t reccomend Romwe for clothing BUT for earrings you only wear a few times out of the year they have a great selection. Romwe has plenty of dupes for Baublebar statement earrings. Don’t get disscouraged by Romwe’s website, it can be chaotic, you really have to search for a good pair of earrings. I reccomend Forever21‘s as well! Ill attach below the pairs I bought and recommend.

Next up are bandanas. Bandanas are similar to statement earrings in my opinion. They dress up any plain outfit and add a fun touch to your hair. I know Madewell, Princess Polly, Nordstrom and Urban Outfitters have some good ones if you look for them!

My favorite summer shoes (other then my Jack Rogers) are Espadrilles. Everyday I find I pair I am in love with. The pink pair below I recently bought at a local boutique and I’m obsessed. I love the look of them and they’re just so practical because they go with almost everything. The flatform gives an even 1-2 inches to your height, perfect for someone short like me. The pink pair definitely needed some breaking into around the toes but it was well worth it. The pink pair comes in a number of colors. Espadrilles seem to be like last summers Mules trend (which I still love). The blue pair are surprisingly from Forever21, I love the look of them and the navy will go with almost anything.

I found all these pieces through the app Dote. It is perfect for when your’re looking for specific items because it searches for the product through all the stores featured in the app (which are most stores). The app lets you know when your favorite items go on sale and you can reedem coins each day for free shipping and more!

Walked Away from the Track

The Unfair Treatment of Women in Athletics

The fight for equal rights has been present in our country for far too long. Race being one, sexuality being another and one becoming more common; the imbalance of equal rights between men and women.

Men receive higher pay, the stereotypical, “men work, women work the house” “boys can do this, but girls can’t.”

Allison is only 17. She goes to a small high school in the state of New Jersey, where she is a part of the cross country team.

“I wasn’t looking for the easy way out. It was a 100 degrees and I was running a workout on the track, reaching 10 laps. At that point, I physically could not get my body to move with the sun beating down on me.”

Although, that wasn’t Allison’s real issue.

“As I was running I noticed the boys team running with their shirts off, not breathing as heavily and not sweating in the same way I was,” Allison said.

There Allison was, in a short sleeved shirt and shorts where the weather was reaching 100-degrees.

“The boys ran proudly shirtless and in spandex shorts.”

Allison explained that her coaches and athletic director implemented one rule. It was that rule that ultimately led her to walk off the track, one final time.

The rule: Girls can not in any circumstances take their shirts off and wear sports bra’s, they must keep their shirts on at all times.

The reason: The boys will get distracted.

The story doesn’t nearly end there. She voiced to the coaches how unfair it was that the boys ran without shirts and in spandex. Although, it wasn’t the coach’s problem, they weren’t suffering.

Once Allison noticed her surroundings she stopped, and took her shirt off. She ran a lap, the coaches yelled, “shirt on now.” Allison ignored. Ran another lap, coaches yelled “get off the track and put your shirt on.” Allison paused and broke down. A person unfamiliar to being sensitive broke down in the heat of the moment, and walked off the track one final time.

In the attempt to pull herself together and put her anger aside, Allison knocked on the athletic director’s door. There stood the athletic director and assistant principal. This situation was meant to be between Allison and the athletic director. Allison asked the assistant principal to give her a few minutes, he refused to leave.

Allison began going over what occurred outside.

She was stopped, the assistant principal said, “well you know, my daughter plays soccer and has no issue in the heat.”

Allison said, “but soccer is stop and go, you get water breaks and are substituted, she is not running for an hour straight.”

Her reply felt like it meant nothing. She went back and forth trying to get those two men to understand a young girls point of view. Allison wanted the men to notice the unfair treatment she experienced based on being a female. To Allison, it felt like a lost cause.

Later that night, Allison’s mom got a phone call from the assistant principal. He said, “you know Mrs. Regan, Allison came in today very upset, we think you may want to make an appointment for her to meet with the guidance counselor. There are some issues she needs to get worked out.”

When this statement was brought to her attention, Allison explained that it made her feel “belittled” and like “she was crazy.” Allison questioned herself wondering if she just needed to move on. But now, as stories like this are frequent, Allison finds this particular story of importance and value, for every male and female to take note of. Allison’s point is that women need to be treated within athletics equally, in all aspects.

Sports bra’s are worn by olympic athletes worldwide. Across the country, female cross country runners wear sports bras and spandex as their uniforms.

“On June 23, 1972, the President signed Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, into law. Title IX is a comprehensive federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity,” according to The United States Department of Justice.

Assistant Professor of Journalism, at Quinnipiac University, Molly Yanity, worked within sports for many years. It wasn’t familiar for the female journalist to be put down for being a woman, but it has happened.

“The one area where I did catch some flak for being a woman was when I was an AP top 25 voter for college football and now this was in the mid to late 2000’s,” she said.

“Every week when my votes would come out, fans of certain teams who would be dis pleased with my vote. They would send me emails or call me in the middle of the night…that was the only time where people specifically pointed out my sex.”

But, when will some men realize women need to be treated equally, especially in athletics? A step in the right direction would include serious action.

“I don’t think men are just going to be like, hey come on, we feel like this is the right thing to do, that’s not going to happen. It’s going to be lawsuits and what the consumer decides they want,” Yanity said.

We are all the same, but women are still penalized within athletics in every aspect. Allison and Yanity experienced unfair treatment based on their sex in two different ways and two different times. Change is happening but we are not equal just yet.
